Dr. Paul L. Domanico, PhD

Dr. Paul L. Domanico has over 23 years of experience in drug discovery, technology development, and executive management with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and E.I. du Pont de Nemours. From late 2000 through February 2007, Dr. Domanico was Vice President for Technology Development for GSK Research and Development in the US. In 2006, Dr. Domanico started a life sciences consulting company called Paul Domanico Consulting, LLC (www.pauldomanico.com).

Dr. Domanico established the foundation for Innovalyst, LLC and the Innovalyst Intellectual Capital Network, Innovalyst ICANTM in 2007 following strategic discussions with industrial thought leaders that identified a more productive approach to the development and commercialization of innovations. Innovalyst was incorporated in 2008.

Dr. Domanico is a multi-faceted, insightful leader with an outstanding record of delivering well-received corporate strategies, new business concepts, and innovative technologies. He has extensive knowledge of drug discovery, chemistry, biology, and IT, as well as experience creating joint ventures and new companies. He has successfully built and sustained new organizations, established productive and innovative cultures, and led large international and multidisciplinary teams through all phases of exploration.

Under Dr. Domanico’s leadership, the following innovations were commercialized while at GSK:

  1. A fully automated protein microcrystallography microfluidics platform

  2. A first-in-class enzyme microfluidics platform to perform fully autonomous biochemical mechanism of action studies.

  3. A fully integrated protein microarray platform and a large repertoire of multiplexed disease marker immunoassays.

  4. A suite of software tools to capture, analyze, and manage data from any type of high throughput screening campaign.

  5. A novel software architecture and associated tools that delivered the world’s first distributed computing environment specifically for drug discovery and development

  6. A fully automated and integrated experimental design robotics platform to optimize any genetic, cell-based, or HTS assay.

In 2005, Dr. Domanico formalized his methods for delivering innovations into GSK's Technology Development Accelerator. The Accelerator was unique to the pharmaceutical industry. It leveraged GSK expertise and infrastructure, as well as external investment to develop and commercialize applications critical to drug discovery and development. To establish a long-term personalized medicine strategy, Dr. Domanico created an international think-tank to define future scenarios. This work led to the implementation of several clinical trial case studies.

Dr. Domanico’s group created a facility to perform longitudinal, multi-modal molecular imaging studies. These capabilities enable scientists to measure efficacy, toxicity, mechanism of action, and tissue distribution of compounds in live animals and in real time. To augment this activity, his group initiated the development of a suite of instruments to automate the collection and analysis of real-time environmental, physiological, and behavioral data streams on rodents and small primates.

Dr. Domanico serves on several Scientific Advisory Boards. He is a regular lecturer at The University of North Carolina, Kenan-Flagler Business School’s Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. He was a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Nanotechnology and North Carolina’s Economy. Dr. Domanico holds a PhD in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Medicine from Penn State University. He received his post-doctoral training in Molecular Biophysics at E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.
