Dr. James R. Snapper, MD
Dr. Snapper is a physician, scientist, and academician with extensive experience within the pharmaceutical industry combining a deep understanding of clinical medicine with basic science in what is now called "Translational Medicine." He is a 1972 magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University, Dartmouth (BMS and Research Prize 1972) and Harvard Medical Schools (MD, Cabot Prize and Alpha Omega Alpha in 1974) and is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine with active licensure in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Massachusetts. He did his clinical training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. His academic career includes being a tenured full Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, recipient of many NIH grants, and author of numerous scientific publications.
From 1998 through 2006, he worked for GlaxoSmithKline most recently holding the title of Global Director of Respiratory Medicine and Senior Physician. Previous titles and groups within GSK have included Global Director of Experimental Medicine, Director Translational Medicine and Technology, and Senior Director, Discovery Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. His work has focused on the identification and validation of new technologies to increase disease understanding allowing for better mechanistic subject stratification to increase the probability of success in drug trials by better aligning the subject to the pharmacological action of new drugs. His primary focus has been on respiratory medicine, but studies have included arthritis, neurology and psychiatry, and cardiovascular disease, among others. His particular interest has been in the application of quantitative imaging (PET, CT, and MRI) to drug development. He is internationally known and has lectured widely on a variety of academic and drug development-related topics. He is currently serving as a consultant in translational medicine.
